Bouldering is climbing without ropes – it is fun, safe, adrenalin inducing and easy to try out and enjoy whatever your age or experience.
It is great for fitness, confidence, agility, strength, stamina, balance and entertainment.
It offers a great way to hone and build your skills whether you just want to stay out of the rain, or whether you want to progress towards roped outdoor climbs.
We want to build a bouldering room at Minehead EYE.
We are aiming to raise the first £5,000 (total cost about £20k) through crowd funding (online fundraising). We need 500 people to invest just £10 each by the end of February 2013.
We will then apply for s106 funding from the Council and raise the remaining funds through other grants and traditional fundraising.
We will give brilliant rewards to anyone who supports our campaign:
- We will enter everyone who donates anything at all into a prize draw to win a year's free bouldering!
- We will give everyone who donates at least £10 a free bouldering session for 2 people once we are up and running!
- We will give anyone who donates at least £100 a fantabulous bouldering party for you and 10 mates!
- We will give anyone who donates £1000 free bouldering for life (of the room at least!) and our eternal gratitude!
Youth Clubs Reopened under the EYE !
Check out this report from the front page of the West Somerset Gazzette about our recent efforts to keep the local youth clubs open..... report by Hannah Green
YOUTH clubs in West Somerset will reopen within weeks after falling victim to government cuts – thanks to the efforts of a Mineheadcommunity group.
Staff from Minehead EYE have been working with clubs afterSomerset County Councilannounced in April it would no longer directly provide youth services.
The decision affected clubs in Minehead, Watchet, Williton, Carhampton, Luxborough and Stogursey.
Funding has been found from youth opportunity funds, housing associations, parish councils and other bodies to keep all six clubs open at least one night a week for another year.
Minehead EYE will employ the youth workers and oversee the clubs, alongside parish and town councils and committees.
EYE chair Naomi Griffith said: “As the largest youth centre in the area we could not stand by and see these clubs close.
“It certainly won’t be easy but our journey to get Minehead EYE open has taught us to persevere.
“We will be working with the young people to help them to fundraise for their clubs, as well as with the committees and town and parish councils to see how they can get involved.
“It is an exciting time for us all.”
Ché Percival, lead youth worker at the Watchet and Stogursey clubs, said: “When we realised we would lose our jobs six months ago because of government cuts, luckily Minehead EYE stepped in and we started working together to find an answer.
“I have been employed by the government as a youth worker for 18 years and now Minehead EYE will employ me and other youth workers.
“Without the EYE, some of these clubs could have shut, which would have caused chaos.
- Watchet youth club in particular is going brilliantly and is vital to kids in the town – not only does it give them something to do, it teaches them life skills and boosts their self-esteem.
“The new partnership with Minehead EYE is brilliant news and it is hoped we can find a way to keep these clubs going beyond the next year. They are such important parts of their communities.”

JOB OPPORTUNITY
Music Leader Trainee
An exciting opportunity for a musical person in West Somerset as part of the Eye’s FREE ‘Making it in the Music Industry’ course starting in October.
Working with the Music Leader and Project Managers, the trainee will have a significant role in the way the course is run and shaped.
The trainee will be part of the music making process, providing inspiration and guidance in song writing. They will also assist in the gathering and processing of feedback and statistical data from sessions and meetings.
During the recording process, the trainee will work with the engineer and young people, encouraging the learning process and confidence of the pupils. The performance and tour will involve the trainee being the ‘right hand man’ of the tour manager, also helping with sound and P.A organisation. This is a paid role and a great opportunity to get real music teaching experience and gain knowledge from professional musicians that are running the course. Course starts on the 3rd October .
If you’d like to get involved or know anyone who would benefit from this kind of experience, ring Joe on 01643 703155 or email joeheley@minehead-eye.co.uk
